FINAL idea
After all my tutorials and crit’s i decided to diverse from print and go to screen, as i felt this was the best way to show my facts and figures in the way that i wanted. This would give me the opportunity to show the effect that i wanted within my design work.
The idea of my screen visuals is that the home page has the image of Africa as a whole, and the user can click on any of the countries, which then reveals a separate page which contains the stats of that country, stuff like AIDS deaths, HIV women who have AIDS and are receiving medication etc…On the home page with the map of Africa i have colour the countries to show the prevelance of AIDS in each area. This gives the user a general and glancing look at the state of each country in terms of the AIDS virus, which is what i wanted.
Here are the sub pages of some of the countries that you can click on when browsing the site. Overall i made the site simplified and easy to navigate, i wanted the main colours to be reds to imply death and blood. This is a sub conscious effect that this colour has on peoples minds.
The final effect i had i felt was quite good. It enabled the user to easily and accurately gain information about that country. In terms of format i feel that this could be used for charity’s and the general public who are interested in these types of facts. This could even be used by government agencies to get accurate info about the prevalence of AIDS.
This was my 2nd idea that i came up with. I again wanted the same effect of my 1st idea. here i went for a more traditional approach towards systems and information design, i created a graph like structure to show the certain points of information that i wanted people to pick up on and see. I listed all the countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and then created these sub titles :
- People who have died of AIDS (thousand)
- HIV positive women who are receiving medication (thousands)
- People living with AIDS (millions)
- Population of country (millions)
The idea was that the bars of red went accross and matched up to the figures on the sub-headings at the top of the system, this would then make the reader able to decifer the total figures of each country.
The hard thing for me was the range of data that i had. It ranged from 150,000,000 – to – 1,000. This made it difficult to get the right visual effect that i wanted, and as you can see some of the data doesn’t look very prevalent and looks weak and mediocre. I wanted the visual effect to be more powerful and hard. After my tutorial i found out that the typeface i chose was way too hard and not very readable for what the format was. I was also told to change the coloration of the bars because this made the readability hard to follow. So i took all these ideas into consideration and went on to the next idea.
Collecting research for my project
AsĀ a head start i wanted to get some research done on information design and systems, this would give me an insight into what i was to do and show me what kind of information design there was out there. This research showed me these things:
- Information design is everywhere ranging from the complex to the simple, it can be found in all areas of everyday life
- There are so many topics and so much data to create and visualize graphics out of.
- The data that is collected is crucial and the work cannot be done without it. COLLECT MY DATA FIRST BEFORE VISUALIZATION.
FINAL storyboard
This is the way i wanted to structure my storyboard for the final hand in. I did it in 2 A3 sheets. Here is the first one:
for the 2nd sheet i wanted to highlight some facts about the other countries (the stats) so i placed these facts and figures on the page along with some other pages from my website.
Other stats from pages
As an extra option on the website i added some pages which gave more information to the user. These pages consisted of a graph which showed the antiviral treatment (AIDS medication) compared to the AIDS deaths in each country. Here are some of the pages:
1ST Idea visualization
My concept was to show the effects that the ADS virus has on Africa at the moment. I really wanted to have a shocking effect to my work to visually show people how terrible and crushing this disease is to Sub- Saharan Africa because it seems that no-one notices in today’s western society.
This was my initial idea that i drew up and then visually did in In-Design. I wanted to show each country as an individual and then show the amount of deaths each year that have been AIDS related. The effect i wanted with this was so that people would look at it and be shocked by the figures and outcomes that they see in front of their eyes. After a tutorial i had i found that this was actually completely wrong, and it wasnt even a system so i went back to the drawing board. I again wanted to convey these points within my work:
- Visually effective and original
- Shocking powerful to people who look at it
- original
‘Symbols of Wealth’
this is a little project i have goin on called ‘Symbols of Wealth’. i ‘ve always wanted to design my own clothing range so i decided to start off by designing some tees under this name. ‘SOW’ stands for finding out the true meaning of real wealth in our lives that we live. Every day we go through life wanting more money and wealth, but what we dont realise is that we are so wealthy already, just in different ways that are right infront of our eyes, we are just ignorant to this. My job is to challenge the meaning of ‘wealth’. these tees are in their early stage of development and still have a long way to go, but i want to release them for people to buy pretty soon, just need to finalise some of the designs.
